What is Velasca Tutors’ mission?

Our mission is to deliver effective, high-quality and affordable tutoring, in both the International Baccalaureate and with applications to universities, to anyone who needs it. Founded by six IB graduates, Velasca fully appreciates the value of an IB education and how many doors it can open; however, we can also personally attest to the fact that conventional teaching does not work for all students equally. Moreover, in complicated circumstances like those brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, access to school may be sporadic for some students, leaving a void which online tutoring is poised to bridge successfully.

Here at Velasca we therefore devised a tutoring solution which can be delivered whenever and wherever a student may need it, aimed at tackling anything from test prep for a single exam to thorough revision of an entire subject syllabus.

How can I be sure that I will be taught by qualified and competent tutors?

We understand that the online tutoring marketplace is clouded by multiple players with diverging quality standards, so it can often be hard to know who to trust.

Don’t fret. Here at Velasca, we have very strict criteria for tutor selection, allowing only those who have achieved a level 7/A* in a particular subject to mentor our students. We also ask for CVs and interview potential candidates to ensure that they are a match for both our quality expectations and company culture.

Students are also asked to review their tutors on a rolling basis, so that everyone can have the utmost confidence in the quality of tutoring which is being delivered. All lessons are recorded for future accessibility by the student, but this also allows us the possibility to intermittently review lessons, on a randomised basis, so as to ensure that students are indeed receiving the high-quality, effective tutoring they are promised. That’s the Velasca guarantee.

How will my individual academic needs be met?

At Velasca, one-on-one tutoring forms the bedrock of our organisation, as this is what best allows us to deliver tailored lesson programs designed to meet the specific needs presented by our students.

Our tutors are equipped with all the materials they could require to diagnose the strengths and weaknesses of a student in a particular subject area. Having achieved the highest grades in the relevant subjects themselves, tutors can then delve into tips-and-tricks, content-related advice and a myriad of other pointers to help address student shortcomings.

What features does your online classroom have?

Our online teaching starts with HD Video and Audio, as we believe that face-to-face connection is irreplaceable. We don’t believe in wasting time your time with cheap and unreliable software, so we invest in services that ensure that you have the crispest audio and video possible.

Our teaching happens online, intuitively on our website, so that our students don’t have to receive convoluted training on how to use our software. Students can also count on an interactive whiteboard to collaborate with their tutor: draw, type, annotate, load content, switch between multiple whiteboards and much, much more.

Other classroom functionalities include chatting, screen recording, screen casting and file exchange (PDFs, Photos, Word, Powerpoint, Excel, etc.) 

Our last strength is that this all happens on the LearnCube platform, which has delivered over 30 million minutes of online education in 2020 alone, so you know that your online tutoring experience will be problem-free.

Will my tutor just give me the answer?

At Velasca, our philosophy is to help students understand the concepts behind what they are inquiring about. We don’t believe in just feeding you answers, as this won’t help you with your IB exams, in further education or simply in life, for that matter. We instead look to take students by the hand and share experiences, insights and knowledge which will foster creative, independent, critical thinking, allowing the student can learn to solve problems and reach answers on their own.

Can I review past lessons?

Yes. Access your past lessons from you student calendar and review them in real-time. You will have access to the chat, whiteboard, exchanged files and anything else that happened in the session, just as if you were experiencing it again.

There is no limit to the amount of time you can review past lessons. They will be stored in the cloud forever, for you to access at the touch of a button.

Once I am matched with a tutor, will all of my lessons be scheduled with him/her?

Yes. If you and your tutor hit it off, your tutoring will progress together, as we believe that continuity is one of the most important factors in tutoring. Just like you have one teacher for a particular subject in school, our goal is for you to have on tutor per subject you require assistance in.

What happens if I don’t like my tutor?

We must preface this by saying that due to the rigorous standards we apply when considering tutor applications, it is a rare occurrence for students to be left unsatisfied with the tutor they match with, given the fact that him/her is personally selected by the student based on reviews, matching interests and a wide array of other attributes.

The possibility, however, lingers nonetheless. Therefore, if you were not happy with your tutor, it would be our utmost priority to get you quickly matched with somebody else, ensuring a seamless transition. We would consult with you directly to get you matched with someone who you can see yourself learning with for the foreseeable future, and you could once again talk or chat to them and check out their reviews before starting lessons.

What payment methods do you accept?

Given that we are an online tutoring service, we accept basically all online payments – credit cards, debit cards, PayPal etc. All payments are processed through Stripe, meaning that your billing information is always safe and protected.

We do not accept cash or wire transfers.

Do you offer lesson bundles?

As affordability is one of the pillars of our business, when buying lesson credits you can opt for 5 or 10 lesson packs, which allow you to increasingly save money compared to the flat single hour rate. You can find these options directly listed on our online learning portal.

Through lesson bundles, you can expect a dramatic improvement in IB performance whilst forgetting dramatic pricing.
